The Goldbug Zone

This page is intended to give you some of the fundamentals of what comprises
gold deposits in theory and then to show you some of the unique minerals from the
collecting site links found herein. The collecting sites are described as well.

    • What is a gold deposit?
    • Gold is a rare native metal, chemical symbol AU, which is formed in hydrothermal veins which carry the metal to the earth's surface via superheated water solutions. The gold goes into solution deep within the earth and is carried to the surface and deposited in fissures or may replace other existing rocks and form rich deposits known as ore bodies.

In the first site the miners use metal detectors to find high grade gold ore in quartz. In the second the gold ore is more complex and was not recognized by early miners as a gold-telluride ore. It turns out that the ore had to be carefully roasted to bring the gold to the surface of the host rock.
